Pukei-Pukei is the poison-spitting bird wyvern of World. It is colorful and a bit goofy, with a habit of turning whatever it eats into poison. It is an early lesson in packing Antidotes.
Out in the wild
It lives in the Ancient Forest and the Wildspire Waste. It stores food in its mouth and tail, mixes them with its own toxin and spits the result at threats. Scatternuts are a favorite. It likes to bully weaker monsters but backs off fast from bigger ones, and it tends to run at the first sign of real danger.
Where you meet it
It is the target of the Low Rank 3★ assignment Urgent: Pukei-Pukei Hunt in the Ancient Forest. In High Rank it is the target of the first assignment, Invader in the Waste, in the Wildspire Waste. Iceborne adds a water-element subspecies, Coral Pukei-Pukei.
How the fight goes
Expect poison from two directions: from its mouth and from its tail. What it has eaten can change how that poison behaves. Its roar and wing gusts can also stop you in your tracks.
Hunter’s tips
- Bring Antidotes or Herbal Medicine. The poison adds up fast.
- Thunder is its big weakness. Fire and ice also do good work.
- Sleep and paralysis work well. Poison barely does anything.
- Sever the tail and break the head, wings and legs for extra parts. Pitfall and Shock Traps both work.
