Rathian is the Queen of the Land and one of the most iconic monsters in the series. In World she rules the ground rather than the sky. She mixes fire, poison and a nasty tail flip into one of the best early fights in the game.
Out in the wild
Rathian is a terrestrial predator. She takes down prey with her poisonous tail and strong legs. In World you find her in the Wildspire Waste and the Ancient Forest, where she keeps a nest. She will chase down anyone who steals her eggs.
Where you meet it
You never have to fight Rathian in the main story. Your first hunt is the Low Rank 4★ optional quest Royal Relocation in the Wildspire Waste. After that she shows up in plenty of optional and event quests, and she is a quest target in High Rank and Master Rank too.
How the fight goes
She spends most of the fight on the ground, charging at you and shooting fireballs that can give you fireblight. Her signature move is the backflip tail strike, which poisons you. She can fly too, just not as well as her mate Rathalos.
Hunter’s tips
- Bring Antidotes, and Fire resistance armor helps a lot.
- Sever the tail for extra rewards, and stay out from behind her when she winds up the backflip.
- Dragon is her big weakness, with thunder after it. Flash Pods also work on her.
- Go for the head, her weakest point and a great place to stun. Break the wings too. Pitfall and Shock Traps both work.
