Yian Kut-Ku is a big pink bird wyvern with huge ears, a fire-spitting beak and a habit of tripping over its own feet. It’s been with the series since the first game in 2004, and after skipping World and Rise it’s finally back.
Out in the wild
It lives in the Scarlet Forest and comes in flocks. They gather in large groups during the Plenty, and since there are no eggs or chicks around, it looks more like a search for mates and food than a nesting season. Kut-Ku is skittish but will attack if it feels threatened. Its oversized ears give it amazing hearing, and that’s also its biggest weakness.
It loses its turf war against Arkveld.
Where you meet it
Chapter 4, “New Ecosystems”, where High Rank begins with a capture quest against it. Its return was shown at Tokyo Game Show 2024, in the trailer fans nicknamed “Extended Kut”. A Tempered version is also in Wilds.
How the fight goes
It spits exploding fireballs and charges while spitting fire, often ending the charge in a faceplant. That fall is your opening. After the charge, its mouth is open for a Focus Strike.
Hunter’s tips
- Loud noises stop it in its tracks, so use Sonic Bombs freely. Just know it comes back even angrier afterwards.
- Break the head to get the ear material.
- Flash Pods and traps work too, and fire resistance helps against the fireballs.
