Monsters that use their prominent crest to stun foes with disorienting flashes of light before finishing them off with poisonous saliva.In-game description
Gypceros is the rubber chicken of the series, and it plays dirty. It flashes you blind, spits poison and plays dead. It’s been doing this since the first Monster Hunter in 2004.
Out in the wild
It lives in the Windward Plains, the Oilwell Basin and the Iceshard Cliffs, with Tempered ones in the Ruins of Wyveria. It strikes the crest on its head to make a blinding flash. Its stretchy, rubbery hide soaks up blunt hits and makes shock traps useless. It also spews poisonous filth that drips from ceilings and runs down slopes. Gypceros is Nerscylla’s favourite prey. Nerscylla wins their turf war and then wears the Gypceros hide as a cloak.
Where you meet it
Not in the main story. It starts roaming once High Rank opens, and it’s one of the first High Rank monsters you’ll see in the Basin. A Tempered version is also in Wilds.
How the fight goes
There are two problems: the flash and the poison. If you can see the crest glow before it flashes, you’re still close enough to get stunned. It likes to follow a flash with its long, stretchy tail, aimed at the hunter who’s already stunned. It spits poison while charging, up to three times in a row. When it’s nearly beaten it may play dead. You can even carve it once, and then it gets up and attacks again.
Hunter’s tips
- Break the head to destroy the crest and end the flashes for good.
- Right after a flash, the crest is open for a Focus Strike.
- Clear poison puddles with Watermoss, and bring Antidotes.
- Flash Pods and Shock Traps don’t work on it. Pitfall Traps do.
