Gore Magala wears its wings like a black coat, has no eyes, and spreads a virus that drives other monsters mad. It was the flagship of Monster Hunter 4, and it hasn’t lost any of its menace.
Out in the wild
It lives in the Iceshard Cliffs. Without eyes, it senses the world through fine scales it scatters from its wings. When its senses sharpen, antennae appear on its head, its wings spread and it enters the aggressive Frenzy State. Those black scales can infect other creatures with the Frenzy, which is what makes it so feared. Gore Magala is the juvenile form of Shagaru Magala. In Wilds it’s classed as a Demi Elder, the first time a large monster’s class has changed between games.
Where you meet it
It shows up in the later part of the High Rank story. A Tempered Gore Magala is in Wilds too.
How the fight goes
Its wings glow brighter as the Frenzy builds. Then come the antennae, the roar and a much more aggressive monster. Enough damage, and especially hits to the head, knocks it out of that state. Most of its attacks come from the wings. If the Frenzy gets you, your natural healing drops and you take more damage. The fix is to keep hitting the monster before the virus fully takes hold, which clears it.
Hunter’s tips
- Target the head to end its Frenzy State.
- Break the wings early, because they do most of the work. The antenna can be broken too, and the tail can be cut off.
- After a frenzy blast, the mouth is open for a Focus Strike.
- Don’t bother with Flash Pods. It has no eyes to blind.
