A King of the Skies that never ages and never eats. Guardian Rathalos is Wyveria’s copy of the series’ most famous monster, with glowing veins down its wings and black eyes where the red should be.

Out in the wild

It lives only in the Ruins of Wyveria. An ancient civilisation built it with Rathalos’s power. It can’t breed, doesn’t need food and runs on Wyvern Milk, and its wounds regenerate. Like the original, it’s an excellent flier and gets more violent with its claws in the air.

It beats Guardian Fulgur Anjanath in turf wars, fights Xu Wu, and loses to Arkveld.

Where you meet it

Chapter 3, “The Faithful Keepers”, in the ruins of the Keepers’ village. It returns in High Rank, and a Tempered version comes later. The original Rathalos goes all the way back to the first Monster Hunter in 2004.

How the fight goes

Its claw strikes carry explosive Guardian energy and leave Wylk crystals on the ground. Its fire attacks set those crystals off. It also brings fireblight and poison, so it hits from several directions at once.

Hunter’s tips

Stay clear of crystals when it’s about to breathe fire.
Pop crystals near it yourself with elemental Slinger ammo.
Flash Pods bring it down from the air. Break the wings to keep it grounded, and cut the tail.
