Balahara is the sandworm of the Windward Plains: a leviathan that swims through the desert and turns the ground under you into a trap.
Out in the wild
It lives in the desert parts of the Windward Plains. Its shell is made of fulgurite, the glassy rock left behind when lightning strikes sand. Its long, flexible body churns sand into quicksand pits that swallow careless prey. Inside its mouth are several eye-like sense organs, and the mucus it spits carries glowing bacteria. Researchers think that glow helps it see underground and during sandstorms.
It’s not a top predator. Doshaguma and Arkveld both beat it in turf wars, and it comes off worse against Rey Dau too.

Chapter 1, “A Hunter’s Pride”, just before the Alpha Doshaguma hunt. New to the series with Wilds.
How the fight goes
Most of the danger comes from below: dives, emerges and quicksand. When it surfaces, it bites and spits. Its spit causes waterblight, which slows your stamina recovery, and a Nulberry fixes that. Sometimes the monster you’re actually hunting gets dragged into one of Balahara’s sand pits, which is a gift if you’re quick.
Hunter’s tips
- Its mouth is the weak point, and it’s open right after it spits mucus or bites.
- Balahara hunts by hearing, so a Sonic Bomb or a Screamer Pod hits hard while it’s underground.
- Cut the tail to make its back half much less dangerous. The head can be broken too.
