The King of the Skies. Rathalos has been the face of Monster Hunter since the first game in 2004 and has been in every game since. In Wilds it is still exactly what it should be: a red wyvern that rules from above.
Out in the wild
Rathalos lives in the Scarlet Forest and the Oilwell Basin, and it also appears in the Ruins of Wyveria. Together with Rathian, it claims a wide territory around their nest, and the male’s job is to keep watch from the air. When something gets too close, it dives on it with poison claws and fire breath. If a Rathalos gets into trouble, its mate may fly in to help.
Where you meet it
The regular Rathalos isn’t part of the main story. It starts roaming once High Rank opens. Its Guardian twin, Guardian Rathalos, is a story fight in Chapter 3. Tempered Rathalos is also in Wilds.
How the fight goes
It’s an aerial fight. Rathalos loves to hover and strike with its talons, and those talons poison you. Its fire breath does the rest. After it breathes fire, its mouth is open for a Focus Strike.
Hunter’s tips
- A bright flash brings it down. Bring several Flash Pods, or use the Flashflies around the map.
- Antidotes are a must against the poison claws.
- Break the wings so it flies less, and cut the tail.
- Keep Dung Pods ready in case Rathian joins. Sonic Bombs do nothing, and poison barely works on it.
