Xu Wu is an eyeless octopus that hunts Guardians, and it turns its own slime into blades. Some hunters call it the Piercing Assassin.
Out in the wild
It lives in the Ruins of Wyveria, mostly in the lower levels, and hides in cracks in the rock to ambush prey. It’s the second cephalopod in Wilds, after Nu Udra. The mucus from its tentacles hardens in the air into blades and spearheads, and a huge mouth on its underside can swallow surprisingly large prey. It has no eyes, but its other senses make up for that.
It hunts Guardians and beats Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Ebony Odogaron and Guardian Fulgur Anjanath in turf wars. It also tangles with Guardian Rathalos.
Where you meet it
Chapter 3, “Full Circle”. It ambushes you right after the Guardian Ebony Odogaron fight and takes the body for itself. New to the series with Wilds, with a Tempered version later in High Rank.
How the fight goes
It slips through small crevices and crawls fast across the ground. Its most dangerous move is rearing up, showing its mouth and lunging to swallow you. A heavy hit to the mouth during that wind-up cancels it and can topple it. It can also grab you and drag you toward its mouth.
Hunter’s tips
- The mouth is its weakest point. Hit it hard when it’s exposed.
- Escape a grab with Slinger ammo or by mashing the knife attack.
- Up to four tentacles can be cut off, and the head, mouth and arms can be broken.
- It’s very weak to poison, but Flash Pods and Sonic Bombs do nothing.
