The Queen of the Land has been with us since the very first Monster Hunter in 2004, and she still doesn’t play nice. Rathian fights on the ground, breathes fire, and has a tail full of poison.
Out in the wild
Rathian roams the Windward Plains, the Scarlet Forest and the Oilwell Basin. She’s a ground hunter with powerful legs and a venomous tail. Rathian and Rathalos sometimes hunt together as a couple, and they share a nest. Once she has laid eggs she guards it fiercely, and a mother will move fast to protect her young. If you hurt her badly she flees to that nest, and you can end up fighting both of them there.
She loses her turf war against Arkveld.
Where you meet it
Not in the main story. She starts roaming the maps once High Rank opens. Tempered Rathian is also in Wilds.
How the fight goes
Her signature move is the poison backflip with her tail, and she likes to charge three times in a row. Her reach is wide, and that’s mostly down to the tail. After she breathes fire, the inside of her mouth is tender and a great Focus Strike target.
Hunter’s tips
- Cut the tail. It removes the poison and shortens her reach.
- A Flash Pod knocks her out of the air, even during the tail flip.
- Break the wings so she stumbles or stays grounded when she tries to take off.
- Poison barely works on her and Sonic Bombs do nothing. Bring Antidotes.
