Nu Udra

Nu Udra is a giant octopus covered in oil, and when it gets angry it sets itself on fire. It’s the first cephalopod in the series and the undisputed ruler of the Oilwell Basin.

Out in the wild

It lives deep in the Basin and appears most during the Firespring, the region’s Inclemency. Normally it’s coated in oilsilt, and when it’s enraged it ignites the coating and becomes a horror of flame. Eye-like organs cover its body and arms, and researchers think they’re sense organs. Its soft body squeezes through cracks and moves in strange, hard-to-read ways.

It wins its turf war against Ajarakan and loses to Arkveld.

Where you meet it

You’ll hear it called “the Black Flame” long before you see it. It’s the boss of Chapter 2, “Long-Forgotten Flame”, and another Nu Udra is slain in High Rank in Chapter 5. New to the series with Wilds. Tempered and Arch-Tempered versions exist.

How the fight goes

Every tentacle is a weapon, and every tentacle can be cut off. When it’s enraged, everything burns: it sprays flame, throws burning oil that explodes, and ends with a shower of fire before it coats itself in oil again. After it slams its tentacles into the ground, its beak is exposed for a Focus Strike.

Hunter’s tips

• Bring a cutting weapon and take the tentacles off. Each one shortens its reach.
• Put out burning parts with Watermoss. It leaves the monster weakened.
• Shock and Pitfall Traps work. Fire resistance helps a lot.
