Crowns mark the largest and smallest monsters of each species. Look at a monster through your Binoculars and a crown icon appears next to its name if it qualifies. Size is set when the monster appears, so reroll the map and save crowned hunts as investigations. 26 large monsters can be crowned, 52 crowns in total.
Crown hunting is the classic Monster Hunter side quest: tracking down the biggest and smallest of every monster. It’s also behind some of the hardest trophies in the game. Here’s how to do it without losing your mind.
What crowns are
- Only large monsters can have crowns. Small monsters don’t record sizes.
- A Miniature Crown marks the smallest size, and a gold Giant Crown marks the largest.
- There’s also a silver tier for “nearly the largest”. It counts for the first Giant Crown trophy, but not for the Collector and Master trophies, which need gold.
- Your crowns are recorded in the monster’s Hunting Log and Monster Field Guide entry.
How to check a monster’s size
Pull out your Binoculars from the item bar and look at the monster. If it’s crown-sized, a crown icon appears next to its name. You need to be fairly close, roughly 50 metres.
Always check before you engage. It takes two seconds, and it can save you a whole hunt.
Which monsters count
26 large monsters can carry both crowns, which makes 52 crowns for the achievements. Guardian Arkveld, Jin Dahaad and Zoh Shia can’t be crowned.
One freebie: the story Alpha Doshaguma is always a gold Giant Crown.
Farming methods
Reroll the map
A monster’s size is decided when it appears on the map. Rerolling the map gives it a new size. You can do that by resting at a tent, or by quitting to the title screen without saving.
Since Title Update 1, resting costs 500 Guild Points (it was 300 at launch), so rerolling by resting is more expensive than older guides suggest.
Save-scumming
- Save before the monster spawns. Playing offline makes this easier.
- Check it with the Binoculars.
- No crown? Quit without saving, reload and check again.
The Wounded Hollow
In the post-game Wounded Hollow arena, leaving and coming back rerolls the monster and its size, with no resting needed. Apex monsters and Guardians don’t appear there, though.
Save it as an investigation
Found a crowned monster? Save the hunt as an investigation, from Alma’s Fieldwork History or from the map. The monster keeps its size, and you can repeat the investigation three more times. You can store up to 50 investigations.
Crown trading
Friends and lobbies often share crowned investigations with each other. If you’ve got a crown someone else needs, pass it on, and they’ll usually return the favour.
